5 Materials Perfect for Sustainable Brands
At The Considerate Store our brands and suppliers use all kinds of environmentally friendly materials to make the beautiful products they do and work hard to ensure that their impact on the environment is minimised! Here's a few of them:
Many of our suppliers use "vegan leather" which can be made from a mix of different microfibres including cotton, recycled polyester, recycled nylon and even fruit waste such as apple peels in the case of venusisvegan. Everything is always recycled where possible and not only are these materials more sustainable options in comparison to its traditional predecessor but also saves billions of animals each year with zero compromise on style. Perfect!
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is an incredibly recyclable plastic and we have found suppliers that know how to turn it into beautiful products for you! PET is popular due to its strength, lightweight nature, sustainable properties and it doesn’t lose any of those attributes when it’s recycled. Amazing right? When they are broken down our old plastic bottles and food containers can easily be turned into something useful like your new pair of shoes or bag!Cork
Cork is harvested from Cork Oak Trees and has a negative carbon footprint when it is produced making it an extremely sustainable material for brands. It also has a high quality feel with properties such as being waterproof, hypoallergenic and soft to the touch and sustainable brands focusing on using cork really do embrace the idea of slow fashion, buying less and buying better due to its durability. To add to the positive sustainable section under cork as a material is the fact that the trees it is harvested from only take 9 years to regenerate meaning that there is no need for over farming. Perfect!Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is grown from natural seeds that have not been genetically modified or use of pesticides when growing meaning it causes less harm to the environment. This means compared to the regular cotton, it’s organic counterpart is much more sustainable and better for the environment. Plus it is literally softer for you guys! Whilst using 80% rainwater for irrigation purposes and being harvested in such a way that the fields it is grown on are not put under intense stress, it is often the material of choice for modern sustainable brands. There are some question marks over the amount of water used to produce cotton, and growing popularity for a recycled mix with organic cotton has certainly been noticeable so it will be interesting to see the development of this as a sustainable material.Piñatex
Piñatex is made from pineapple leaf fibres. The leaves which are normally discarded get taken from harvested pineapples and then processed to make an incredibly durable fabric, with any unused fibres then redistributed to the fields as fertiliser. The process is completely environmentally friendly and the company responsible are working with pineapple farmers to add a whole new income stream to their businesses. Everyones a winner!
As the industry for sustainable fashion grows so do the options for eco-friendly materials available to brands producing sustainable footwear, bags and clothing. We pride ourselves on working with sustainable brands that are as passionate about reducing their environmental impact as we are. Who knows we may be adding to this list of sustainable materials very soon!
